~ 2011 30-Hour Famine ~

24,000 children die every day before their 5th birthday from preventable causes – Malaria, Pneumonia, Diarrhoea, and Complications during and after birth. These unnecessary deaths are unacceptable, especially when proven, low-cost solutions exist. World Vision Malaysia recognises the plight of child health and to respond, we will be focusing on the subject of Child Health for 30-Hour Famine 2011. Our theme is “Hunger for Health!”. Together, we can make a difference by ending preventable child death.

30-Hour Famine @ Malaysia

World Vision Malaysia was formed in 1997 and was manned by a handful of staff. At the same time, the famine in North Korea shocked the world and Sin Chew Daily decided to take lead and organised the first 30-Hour Famine in Malaysia. Funds poured in and a record of RM2.6 million was raised.

About 30-Hour Famine 饥饿三十简介

The 30-Hour Famine is a global movement against hunger and poverty. Since its inception 40 years ago, this annual event has gained popularity, particularly among youths and young adults. It has also gained a reputation as being the biggest – and most fun! youth fundraising event in the world. By going without solid food for 30 hours, you can give those who are suffering from hunger and poverty the opportunity for improved health, better quality of life, and most importantly, hope.

How It Began

The origin of Junior Chamber can be traced as far back as 1910, in the city of St Louis, Missouri, United States of America. A young man by the name of Henry "Hy" Giessenbier, a bank cashier, felt that young people acting in a voluntary capacity could fashion a new standard of life for their communities. On October 13, 1915, he called for a meeting with 32 young men present, and an organization was formed under the name of "Young Men's Progressive Civic Association". It was mainly for the community betterment.

The vigor and imagination of the young group attracted the admiration of the St Louis chamber of Commerce, which on February 11, 1918 asked the group to consider the name of "JUNIOR CHAMBER OF COMMERCE", So, the name was born.

The movement spread, and by June 1920, the United State Junior Chamber of Commerce marched on to Canada, New Zealand, Asia, Europe and Africa. In 1914, in Mexico City, the world organization, the Junior Chamber International was formed and since that date, JCI has inspired hundred of thousands of young people across the face of the earth.

History of JCIM

The Junior Chamber movement was introduced to Malaysia (then the Federation of Malaysia) in 1954. Junior Chamber in Sarawak and Junior Chamber in Sabah were affiliated to Junior Chamber International in 1956 and in 1963 respectively. Junior Chamber Peninsular Malaysia, Junior Chamber Sarawak and Junior Chamber Sabah were then identified as three different National Organization (NOMs) directly affiliated to Junior Chamber International.

On 11th October 1975, Junior Chamber Malaysia was formed with the signing of a Merge Agreement between the three separate national organizations in Kuala Lumpur. A Protem Board of Directors under the chairmanship of JCI Senator V T Nathan, Past President of Kuala Lumpur Junior Chamber was founded. This Protem Board was appointed to look into the registration of the new organization to be known as Junior Chamber Malaysia.

In 1976 Junior Chamber Malaysia obtained temporary registration from the Registrar of Societies to operate. The 1st National Convention was held in 1976 itself in Kuala Lumpur. At this National Convention, JCI Senator George Chang was elected the First National President.
